This Might be Chronic, but I Shall Make it Beautiful
I always wondered how it would feel like for someone outside our circle to understand what it is like living with Type One diabetes. I must also say that I have left diabetes speak on my behalf for quite a long time. See, regardless of how fierce and strong we claim to be, deep down we all have this little girl - or maybe big girl - who woke up one day and was forced to face this brutal reality of having to care for her body and literally keep herself alive.
But how alive are we? Have you ever stopped yourself to ask that question?
How alive are we?
How trapped are we within this every day game of testing, carb counting, correcting, and just trying to control our blood sugar? What did we loose in this process? And by always controlling every aspect of living with this chronic illness, how much control has it gained over our being?
I ask these questions not to confuse you in any way, I only ask them because they are there, present within every single woman I've met, present within me, every single day.
I honestly some times feel that we're all these beautiful birds, caged, not even aware that door has always been unlocked. Being born into this gender, we have been blessed with so many challenges to begin with. And as we add layers and layers of misconception, stigma, judgement, conclusions, and points of views deep rooted into a society so utterly sick with labels and titles for everything, we must begin to realize that the door is open, it always has been, but we choose to stay inside - inside our fears, other people's definitions of abilities and disabilities, our true potential, our capacities, or purpose, and our ability to be.
Today, I announce us caged birds no more. I want you to set yourself free. I want you to share your story and help create a different narrative about women living with chronic illnesses. Let's show the world that even though we are chronic, we are also beautiful and magical and just as capable of being whatever our heart sets out to be as any one else.
I've shared my truth.
Will you?
None could have explain it better than you.
